police force for the railways providing a
policing service to rail operators, their
staff and passengers throughout England,
Scotland and Wales.
Every day, we police the journeys of over
six million passengers and 400,000 tonnes of
freight over 10,000 miles of track. We
believe travelling is about more than just
getting there. Its about ensuring safety
and security all the way.

The railways are a unique policing environment with a unique set of needs. British Transport Polices 2,835 police officers and 1,455 support staff exist to provide a specialist policing service to meet those needs.
We police the tracks and provide a service to rail operators, their staff and passengers across the country. We also police the London Underground system, Docklands Light Railway, the Midland Metro tram system, Croydon Tramlink and the Glasgow Subway. Together, we move and safeguard around six million people every day. Policing the railways means policing the community.
As rail crime crosses counties, its impact crosses areas and networks. BTP uses the latest technology to track, prevent and detect crime across the country. Our present structure works across seven geographical areas and we work with local forces to provide the best possible service to the communities we serve.
BTPs history can be traced back to 1826 - to the origins of the police service in Britain. Today we continue to strive to provide a quality policing service. We are an organisation that stays at the forefront of developments within the railway industry and of policing. This means you will find us on the frontline.
