Cards first aid for life savers New tool for medics in emergencies PARAMEDICS will soon get a new tool to help save lives. The “NEXT OF KIN” card will give first responders urgent details of allergies and any medical conditions of patients in emergency situations as well as contact details. The aim of the card---the size of an ordinary credit card--- was suggested by the LANCASHIRE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH FORUM. And could save vital time when a person is found alone, collapsed or unconscious. It is the brother creation of the DATA LINK scheme launched in 2001 in Lancashire, where people write down important details on a form kept in the fridge. More details could be placed on the large form including whether the patient had any responsibilities such as collecting children from school. And the fridge was chosen as it is the last place affected in a house fire. (70000) Of these was distributed)
Blackburn co-ordinator for LANCASHIRE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH FORUM Albert Caville, today said the card was to help with accidents outside the home and would compliment the DATA LINK scheme He said, “The card potentially saves lives as well time in an emergency. The fridge was a great idea but we needed something for when you are out and about and less likely to have anything on you that can help tell paramedics about you. The previous scheme was greatly accepted by the emergency services and this one has the potential to be even better”. Elderly or vulnerable people will be the initial targets to carry the cards but will be available to every one. While several similar schemes have been run in a handful of other parts of the country, the Lancashire area will be the first to offer them for free. A spokesman for Lancashire Ambulance Service today welcomed the initiative. He said “This card sound a great idea. Time is a big factor in an emergency. Anything the public can do to save time will assist us and is greatly appreciated”. The yellow and green card ------ (the colours of the emergency services)------was launched at an information day at Mill Hill Community Centre Blackburn, where 25.000 cards were unveiled. But Mr Caville said he wanted to make them available to the whole of Lancashire and is appealing to businesses to help with sponsorship. The forum is also keen to get elderly groups and other organisations involved in distributing the cards. |

The first 25,000 was launched in June 2005 was funded by LNWF. Since then a further 50,000 have been funded by Chorley Primary Care Trust and Twin Valley Homes Association.
Therefore 75,000 have been distributed through various groups. A further 50,000 have now been funded by Thwaites Charitable Trust and Wyre Primary Care Trust making in total 125,000 possible lives saved. It has been a huge success for which on behalf of LNWF and the people who have received them, I would like to thank the donors of this scheme a very big thank you.
Hopefully we can continue expanding this scheme.
This is proof once again that Neighbourhood Watch along with other organisations are looking after the good of all. THANK YOU ONCE MORE TO ALL THE FUNDERS OF THIS SCHEME |
